Google “Living Street Art”
Seeing your work on big screens never gets old. Whether it’s in theaters, in stadium, or in this case, at Google’s Chicago Headquarters, there is something special about seeing a creation that is literally bigger than yourself. I was so proud of this video installation because of the collaborate efforts of our friends at Google, Chicago street artist’s Elloo and Penny Pinch, and of course the incredible team at Banner.
I had several chances to composite video for this installation when I was the Lead Compositor on the prior “Voxel” and “Ethos” projects, but this was my first chance at directing a project this massive. For each video installation in this series, it was important that it was authentic to Chicago. With Google’s Chicago HQ located in Chicago’s thriving West Loop, buzzing with some of the best restaurants in town and a vibrant street art scene, the concept just felt right.
From a technical perspective, we had already figured out most of the compositing hurdles of piecing together 41 televisions seamlessly from the previous Google “Voxel” project. So this time, we focused our efforts on honing in an animation style that was authentic to each of the artists, who had very different styles. With her specialties in illustration, Matea Lo handled the majority of the Elloo section with me animating the Penny Pinch section. We had Jessica Conquest’s support along the way and Alex Hocking and Matthew Dominick filmed the video content for the lower left screen. I oversaw the entire project and I would love the opportunity to collaborate with this team someday.
